Canadian Oil Sands production is set to double by 2020, and new markets must be found for this oil. Because Alberta is landlocked and has limited refining capacity, currently 99% of Oil Sands exports end up in the American Midwest. To get its oil to new markets at the best possible price, Canada is exploring three options: it can pipe the oil to the Pacific Coast and export it to Asia, refine the oil in Alberta, or pipe the oil to the Gulf Coast using the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline. Many issues surround the pipeline and much is at stake for Americans.
