I have been a single Mother for six years now. In the fall of 2007, I decided to go back to school to persue a radiology degree. I have gone to school at least part time while maintaining home, work and school work of mine and my childrens. I got an email just last night letting me know that I am no longer eligible for federal financial aid and I have maintained over a 3.0 GPA. It said I exceeded some timeframe? I am devestated simply because without financial aid I cannot finish school. Can anybody shed some light and give me hope for our future?

To red28078,
With the new federal funding guidelines this summer i would suggest you talk with the administration of your college the first thing.  Ask them about the new federal guidelines.  I am thinking they will know how for you to reapply under the new guidelines.

Here is an article Gary put up the other day which may give you a little more insight also.

So, you’ve decided that you want to attend an online college, but you can’t quite figure out how to pay for it. Don’t worry, you’re in good company.
Finding financial aid for online studies is very similar, and just as easy as finding financial aid to attend a traditional campus college. Many online students will qualify for federal financial aid as well as private scholarships. Some students receive grants from employers, and you may even find that online schools themselves offer financial aid in the form of loans and payment programs.
In the past, online schools had trouble qualifying as financial aid distributors, thanks to the “50% Rule” that required that schools offer at least 50% of their courses in traditional classrooms before receiving financial aid. However, in 2006, this ruling was overturned, and now almost all online schools offer federal student aid.
To receive financial aid from the federal government, you will need to get started by filling out the Federal Application for Student Financial Aid, also known as the FAFSA. This application will determine your level of need and ability to pay for school yourself, and once it has been reviewed, will determine your eligibility for loans and grants from the federal government. When you are deemed eligible, you’ll be able to apply for a variety of financial aid, including Perkins Loans, Stafford loans, PLUS loans, and federal scholarships and grants.
The federal government isn’t the only place you can find assistance. Most scholarships do not have requirements against using funds for online college, and you should take advantage of this fact. It is entirely possible to find scholarships, internships, grants, and loans that are made with your situation in mind. Some of the most reliable resources for both public and private financial aid are scholarship websites. One of the best of these is College Board, which is the organization behind the SAT test. College Board’s scholarship search has more than 2,300 sources of college funding that reaches nearly $3 billion in financial aid that’s ripe for the picking.
If you’re a working professional, it’s worth the effort to speak with your supervisor and human resources department about financial aid. By completing a degree program that will help you grow as a professional, the organization you work for will enjoy the benefits of your continued education. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Another important source that you should not overlook is your own online college. You will find that many online colleges offer financial assistance in the form of loans and payment programs. Still others are very ready to help you in your search for scholarships and grants through federal and private resources as well.
As you can see, finding financial aid for attending an online college is not difficult, as long as you’re willing to put in the time and effort to find good resources. Be sure to check out all of the options available to you, and you should be able to make online college both affordable and worth your time.

Hello, I used to work customer service for a local student loan company.  I’ve been out of the field for a year so I’m not really sure what the current yearly loan limits but my thought is….The Government (not the school) has set a yearly limit on how much you are able to borrower along with a limit on how much total you can borrow for your undergrad and then as a grad student, aka your Aggregate Limit.  Now, I know about 2 years ago when they raised the maximum about that you could be eligible for yearly, the did not raise the Aggregate Limit.  I think I’ve heard they raised the yearly limit again since, I know I’ve heard mention about the Pell grants lately, but I am unsure about the aggregate limit.  And the limit is significantly higher for grads than it is for undergrads.  Anyway, my suggestion is to go to your Financial Aid officer and ask them specifically about your Aggregate limit.  Depending on how much you have it may be possible that you’ve met it.  If that’s the case, unless they decide to raise it or you move on to a Graduate course of study you may not be eligible for anymore aid in loans.  Also something else to consider would be the loan types.  You usually have two different types of Stafford loans, subsidized and unsubsidized.  Usually you get a little of both each year.  Double check with your financial aid officer where you stand there too.  And something else, after working with many financial aid offices, make sure you speak to someone who is well informed and keeps up with current changes.  www.finaid.org has been one of my favorite websites to locate useful and user friendly information.  You should be able to find the current limits and any other info you might have.  (no this is not the company I worked for, but I used it even then when looking up info for customers)  Good luck to you.

I’m sorry to hear about this, it is happening to a lot of people unfortunately. Federal financial aid is proving to be highly inadequate for mothers like you and I.
Scholarships are often the only option for us moms who want to study but can’t afford to pay for it. I am not 100% sure if you can gain a scholarship when you’ve already started your degree, but I believe you can as this $10,000 scholarship that you can win can be used for ‘any educational purpose’ according to the site. Check it out here, it’s worth a try.
Best of luck to you.

I also wrote an article about this topic here, if it interests you to read about it further:
